Launched in 1991 with the release of Timothy Zahn's 'Heir To The Empire', the Star Wars novels have become some of the most popular science-fiction books around.
Following a range of different storylines, the books expand the Star Wars universe, and flesh out many of the characters only hinted at in the original trilogy of films.
The main themes revolve around the New Republic's battle against the remnants of the Empire, still commanded by Imperials such as Warlord Zsinj, Grand Admiral Thrawn and Ysanne Isard, and Luke's ongoing quest to re-establish the Jedi.

Recently, 'Vector Prime', the first of a new trilogy entitled 'The New Jedi Order' set 20 years after the Battle of Endor, has caused uproar by killing off the character of Chewbacca.
Although author R.A.Salvatore defends his decision, many fans are in uproar over the move, not least because Chewbacca does not die a heroic death. Salvatore has also dismissed claims that Chewbacca will resurface later on in the trilogy.
